Sobriety

Casey Davidson - Hello Someday

In addition to the many books listed below, Casey Davidson’s SSK (Sobriety Starter Kit) was extremely effective for me in early sobriety. Casey also maintains a Facebook group supporting sober and sober curious folks. Hello Someday is also a fabulous podcast.

The Luckiest Club

Laura McKowan’s online sober community. Laura wrote one of my favorite sobriety books, We are the Luckiest. Laura also has a Substack called LoveStory.

Books

Some of the books that really spoke to me (a contemplative, queer, non-binary person) during my journey.

  • The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley. I probably listened to this one at least three times. I kept coming back to it for its relatability, humor, and encouraging wisdom.

  • Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker. The most political of all the books listed here. It helped me see sobriety as a radical act.

  • The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray. A very raw and personal account of getting sober.

  • Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke. Not a sobriety book per-se, but contains very useful information about how addiction works in the brain. This understanding helped me push through the discomfort of early sobriety.

  • Drinking, A Love Story by Caroline Knapp. I related to this because Caroline talks about her alcoholism in the context of her career. It was very eye-opening for me.

  • Euphoric by Karolina Rzadkowolska. When I stopped drinking it was because I had the sense of a bigger why. Karolina really leans into this idea as well.

  • Untamed by Glennon Doyle. Glennon Doyle is of course poignant and hilarious. Not a sobriety book per se, but Glennon is no stranger to overcoming addiction.

Alcoholics Anonymous

AA was not really part of my sobriety journey. However, in very early sobriety I did attend a meeting called Newcomers Keep Coming. They don’t really cover the 12 steps. They provide a very supportive space for people trying to get through early sobriety.

Here are some teachers of movement modalities who I know and trust.
